Monsignor Arnaldo Carvalheiro Neto, 57, Bishop of Jundiaí, Brazil, is wearing out the patience of his flock, writes InfoVaticana.com (19 September).
Carvalheiro Neto has been involved in a series of controversies since his arrival in August 2022.
One of the most recent was his order to remove the crosses from the Eucharist tables. He wants them to be placed beside the table, not on the table.
If the cross is placed on the table, it should not be in the middle of the table, so that the faithful's view of what is happening on the table is not obstructed, Monsignor Carvalheiro Neto insists.
On 9 September, he published new liturgical regulations which also ordered that no large and tall candlesticks be used on the Novus Ordo table.
The bishop wants his orders to be followed "faithfully".
Apart from this, he has shown a marked alienation from both his clergy and the faithful.
By dividing the diocese into deaneries, he has delegated most communication to the deans, making it difficult for the clergy to have access to him. It is almost impossible for an ordinary priest to speak directly to the bishop.
A joke has become popular among the permanent deacons of the diocese: "Does anyone know the new bishop?"
In addition, a small group of people are pushing for marriages to be held outside the churches, a desire that most priests oppose. Monsignor Carvalheiro Neto and his Vicar General are lobbying for this practice to be allowed, causing a split among the priests.
There is also a bar in Jundiaí where Neto is often seen. During his last visit, he invited several seminarians to a samba party, in an atmosphere unsuitable for the formation and behaviour of future priests. Source
