The Salesian priest from Cadiz, Marco Antonio Martínez Moreno, is once again the subject of controversy after a controversial image of him celebrating Mass has emerged.
This newspaper has not been able to confirm whether the image was taken before or after the consecration, but the photo speaks for itself. It is of Marco Antonio Martínez Moreno, a Salesian priest from Cadiz celebrating a Mass at a Salesian camp in Islantilla (Huelva).
In the picture, you can see the priest celebrating Mass in a swimming pool. The issue is not that the altar boys attend Mass in their bathing suits (already a colossal lack of decorum) but that the priest appears in the Mass accompanied by a boy holding the sacred form and a girl raising the chalice. The photo could well correspond to the moment of the offertory or, what would be worse… after the Consecration, to the part in which the 'Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world' is recited. The controversial photo was released by the priest himself on his social networks accompanied by the following message: "The secret? Celebrating the Eucharist, goodnight, morning prayer, the sacrament of reconciliation that the kids live normally throughout the year, as they are used to, not just in extraordinary moments. And knowing that they are young and also want to have fun. Centro Juvenil Futuro Abierto #VeranoSalesiano Grupo Waingunga".
In another snapshot, you can see the improvised altar in the pool area with all the young people in the water and the priest dressed in an alb sitting with his feet in the water wetting his vestments.
The image has caused havoc and, according to what InfoVaticana has been able to find out, the discontent and anger within the diocese of Asidonia-Jerez is considerable. The photo is believed to have reached Bishop José Rico Pavés himself.
But unfortunately, this is not the first time that this priest has been in the news for his extravagances and for turning the Mass into a real circus. In 2020, this Salesian priest was in the news for performing magic tricks at a Mass with the students of the Nuestra Señora del Rosario school in Rota.
The priest Marco Antonio Martínez Moreno entered the Salesian community as a novice at the age of 19, and was finally ordained in 1996. He graduated in Theology, Philosophy and Psychology, living itinerantly between the provinces of Cádiz, Badajoz, Seville and Granada. In 2006 he was assigned to Huelva, a city where years before he had worked with young people within the framework of the Carabela Youth Association, founded in 1990, and in the management of the parish that the Diocese of Huelva had ceded to the Salesians. He is currently a priest in Jerez. Source
